The Supreme Court in Hobart had previously heard an Express Post parcel was intercepted at the Mornington Mail Centre on January 12, 2016, and was found to contain 501 ecstasy tablets and a small amount of cocaine.

The parcel was addressed to Melick for delivery to a PO Box registered in his parents’ name.

Melick is the son of Hobart barrister Greg Melick.

During sentencing submissions on Wednesday, Melick also pleaded guilty to firearms offences which related to his possession of two double barrelled sawn-off shotguns as well as a prohibited semiautomatic rifle.

In sentencing, Justice Michael Brett took into account Melick’s lack of prior convictions and his efforts to rehabilitate himself since the offending.

Melick was sentenced to 18 months’ jail, wholly suspended. He must complete 161 hours of community service.
