A JURY has found a Southern Tasmanian man guilty of drug charges following a Supreme Court trial outlining how a package of ecstasy pills was sent through the post.

Thomas Oliver Melick, 29, had pleaded not guilty to trafficking in a controlled substance.

But a jury returned a verdict of guilty on Thursday night, following the closing address by Crown prosecutor Allison Shand.

In closing the case, Ms Shand said a parcel was addressed to Mr Melick for delivery to a PO Box registered in his parents’ name. Mr Melick is the son of Hobart barrister Greg Melick.

Ms Shand said having the drugs delivered to that PO Box was like “hiding something in plain sight”.

Earlier in the trial, the court heard an express post parcel was intercepted by security and found to contain 501 ecstasy tablets and a small amount of cocaine.

Mr Melick’s barrister Chris Gunson, SC, had previously said the crown’s case was almost entirely circumstantial.

The case has been adjourned until March 14.
