UPDATED: A 16-HOUR stand-off between police and two people armed with at least one gun in the Launceston suburb of Trevallyn has been resolved, with police saying a “tactical resolution” had ended the siege.

Police have take a 24-year-old man and 40-year-old woman into custody.

The incident, in New World Avenue, started on Friday afternoon and police say a number of shots were fired in their direction.

The couple stayed inside a house, in what is normally a quiet suburban street, armed with a firearm.

A number of nearby homes were evacuated overnight as a precaution.

“We would like to thank the residents in the Trevallyn area for their patience, co-operation and understanding,” a police spokesman said.

EARLIER: A MAN and woman have barricaded themselves inside a house in a Launceston suburb and as many as 20 gunshots have been fired at police.

Police are continuing to negotiate with the two people, who police say are known to each other, and they remain hopeful of a peaceful outcome.

Police are calling on the public to avoid the Reatta Rd, Trevallyn, area until further notice.

Nearby homes have also been evacuated as a precaution.

Detective Inspector Philippa Burk said police arrived at the scene and between 10 to 20 shots were fired at officers but no one was injured.

“We have negotiators who are negotiating with the persons in the house to peacefully resolve it,” Insp Burk said.

“At this point in time we are not treating it as a hostage situation.”

Insp Burk said police would remain at the scene for as long as necessary.

“My best advice to both of them is to surrender, put the gun down … and hand yourself in to police,” she said.

Police went to the property around 4.30pm as part of an ongoing investigation.

Nobody has been injured.

It is the second incident involving a gun in the area this week after a woman was shot in the leg at a Trevallyn house on Wednesday night.
