UPDATED: A SHOOTING in the North of the state on Wednesday that left a woman with “significant injuries” and a vehicle pelleted with bullets is part of a three-night binge of firearm use, Tasmania Police say.

The 47-year-old Newnham woman is recovering in Launceston General Hospital after undergoing surgery on Thursday morning to remove a bullet from her upper thigh and repair a broken femur.

Tasmania Police is investigating the incident, which took place at a Trevallyn property on New World Avenue about 6pm on Wednesday.

“Our information is that there were numerous people home at the time, and unfortunately there were some youths as well,” Insp Fox said.

“We haven’t seized a firearm yet, but as the investigations continue throughout the day we hope to identify the people responsible and locate the firearm.

“The round that was removed from the woman’s leg will be sent to ballistics for testing, and until it returns from testing I wouldn’t like to say the calibre.”

Gunshots were heard in the usually quiet residential Launceston suburb on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings.

Police have ruled out domestic violence and don’t believe it was a random attack.

“At this stage our enquiries indicate it is not accidental,” Insp Fox said.

“All parties in the house were known to each other and were general associates. We are confident it is not a random attack.

“We have a specific line of inquiry and detectives are working on that now.”

Police are establishing a timeline of events from the night using witness statements to locate the offenders and are calling on anyone who may have heard the firearm discharges, or saw anyone running or driving away from the scene to come forward.

Information can be provided to Launceston CIB on 131 444 or anonymously to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
