Named: Tony Michael-Lee Smith in court for dangerous driving, acts intended to maim

A 43-year-old man charged with multiple offences over a massive crash that left a car in flames, a caravan jammed against a bridge and the main road between Maryborough and Hervey Bay blocked for hours can now be identified.

The name has been revealed of a 43-year-old Urangan man charged over the three-vehicle crash on the Maryborough Hervey Bay Road at Susan River on October 10 which blocked the road for hours.

The case against Tony Michael-Lee Smith was mentioned in Hervey Bay District Court on October 11, and includes one charge each of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, driving unlicensed, driving under the influence and acts intended to maim.

The matter was adjourned until October 17.

The crash, which happened about noon, involved multiple vehicles and a caravan.

A Queensland Police Service spokeswoman said Maryborough Hervey Bay Rd was closed for hours while crews investigated and cleared the scene.

Diversions were in place on Thursday at Booral Rd roundabout and Churchill Mine Rd.

A Queensland Fire Department spokesman said four fire crews initially responded to the scene when one of the vehicles caught fire; it was soon brought under control.

Two fire crews remained at the scene with both lanes for some time.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokesman said one man who was experiencing neck pain was transported to Hervey Bay Hospital in a stable condition.

The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating.
