Queenslanders are in the midst of a brutal cold snap as icy temperatures grip the state’s southern and central regions, with many towns going bellow freezing point overnight.
The Bureau of Meteorology said the temperature gauge dropped to -3.3C in Oakey early this morning, while Applethorpe was -2.4C and Wellcamp Airport -2.1C.
Closer to the coast Amberley recorded a low of 0.6C, Beaudesert 1.9C and Canungra: 0.3C.
The Bureau said the cold snap was due to a large high pressure system settling over much of the country, which was bringing a cool and frosty to the day.
In Allora, on the Darling Downs on Saturday, the temperature was a freezing -3C.
The Bureau said it was cool across much of Queensland on Sunday with morning fog and frosts across the southern, inland and central parts of the state and in parts of the southeast.
However, the Bureau said the daytime conditions would be dry and generally sunny in the southeast, with just a few light showers about the far northeast coast.
Senior forecasters said that while mornings will be cold, getting out of bed on Monday won’t feel quite as icy, with temperatures likely a degree or two warmer.
“But then once we get into Tuesday, and particularly midweek, we’re going to see temperatures there climb probably five or six degrees,” a senior forecaster said.
“Then we’ll get another burst of cold weather later on this week.
“It can see those cold, frosty mornings return.”
