Weather forecast: Brutal cold snap hits Queensland as temperatures plunge to lower than Hobart

Parts of Queensland have woken up to subzero temperatures which triggered widespread frost with the weather bureau warning the big freeze is going nowhere.

Oakey resident Maree Wells says apparent temperatures in the small town fell to as low as -7C, causing major frost.

South East Queensland residents are set to freeze through a brutal cold snap in coming days after parts of the Sunshine State recorded lower temperatures than Hobart this morning.

Actual temperatures fell to as low as -3.1C in Oakey, -2.8C at Wellcamp and -2.2C at Warwick, according to the Bureau of Meteorology. The notoriously cold regions recorded widespread frost.

In comparison, temperatures in Hobart were 5.9C this morning.

In Brisbane, temperatures dropped to 7.9C, 0.7C at Ipswich, 2.9C at Logan, 8.9C at Redcliffe, 8.2C on the Gold Coast and 4C on the Sunshine Coast.

The weather bureau‘s Daniel Hayes said cooler temperatures started to kick in a day ago but were more pronounced overnight.

“We did have some breezy conditions to finish off the week. It got quite windy with those westerlies coming through, but as that high has moved closer, our winds have dropped off,” he said.

“With lighter winds, clear skies, the ground can cool off quite well, and that cools the air above it.

“We’ve seen those temperatures getting quite a bit cooler through the overnight period, hence that increasing frost and starting to see more negative temperatures come in.”

Mr Hayes that it was expected to be this sort of pattern for the next week.

“Any warming that we get that’s probably only going to be a couple of degrees between now and around Tuesday, Wednesday,” he said.

“From the mid to latter part of next week, it will get cooler again.”
