CLARENCE Mayor Doug Chipman looks likely to retain his seat but preferences may still have a role to play.
As of Tuesday night, Ald Chipman sat on 33.48 per cent with his nearest rival, Tony Mulder, on 22.66 per cent.
Greens Beth Warren was in third position with 19 per cent and Alderman Richard James would be disappointed with his 11 per cent return.

Ald Chipman remained hopeful of another term as mayor.
“It’s too early to say anything,” Ald Chipman said.
“It’s been a tight campaign with some good-quality candidates.
“I’m pleased to be leading the primary vote at this stage.”
The race for the deputy mayor position is on a knife edge with five candidates polling between 10-12 per cent of the vote.
Heather Chong currently leads that race with 12.72 per cent with Dean Ewington narrowly behind on 11.92 per cent.
Meanwhile, Brighton Mayor Tony Foster has easily been re-elected, winning 57 per cent of the vote.
