AN ALLEGED high-ranking Bandidos motorcycle club member has appeared in a Hobart court after being charged with drug trafficking.

Barry Douglas Salter, 55, appeared in an after-hours sitting of Hobart Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday night charged with trafficking in a controlled substance, which police allege was methylamphetamine and cocaine.

Police will allege the trafficking occurred on December 18 last year at East Devonport.

Mr Salter, of Claremont, applied for bail through defence lawyer Fabiano Cangelosi.

Bail was refused by Justice of the Peace Barry Jackman, who adjourned the matter until Wednesday.

Earlier, police said they had charged a 55-year-old on Tuesday morning in a joint operation between Tasmania Police’s Serious Organised Crime Division and the Australian Federal Police’s National Anti-Gangs Squad.

Police earlier said the man was the president of the Hobart chapter of the Bandidos when he was charged in relation to the trafficking of more than half a kilogram of methylamphetamine and 83 grams of cocaine into the state.

Police said they would allege the drugs were intercepted at the Spirit of Tasmania in December.

Detective Acting Inspector Nikala Parsons said the arrest followed on from the large-scale police operation conducted at Dover on June 10.

“Seven people have now been charged in connection with this seizure,’’ she said.

“The disruption of these organised criminal entities within Tasmania will continue through the collaborative efforts of our partnership agencies, such as the National Anti-Gangs Squad.”

Police swarmed Dover on June 10 as part of a major crackdown on the outlaw motorcycle club, an operation that involved more than 60 officers.

Mr Salter is expected to appear in Hobart Magistrates’ Court again on Wednesday morning.
