Lowes Petroleum and BP to reopen only manned fuel station at Strahan in early 2024

Since April this year, the closest place Strahan residents have been able to get petrol is at an unmanned station near the airport. But that will soon change.

Strahan’s only manned petrol station is set to return early next year.

Since April, the West Coast town has been without a manned petrol station after BP closed its doors for redevelopment.

The only place people in the town can get petrol is an uncrewed station near the airport.

However, along with Lowes Petroleum, the BP service station at Strahan will reopen in early 2024.

Lowes Petroleum Tasmania spokesman Michael McCarthy said growing tourism numbers necessitated a new fuel station.

“Service stations are vital for tourism,” Mr McCarthy said.

“They contribute to the accessibility, convenience, and overall infrastructure that supports the needs of both residents and tourists.

“Having service stations in areas away from capital cities allows tourists to extend their travel range.”

Mr McCarthy said extensive work had been done to the Strahan petrol station.

“We want locals to be aware we are working as quickly as possible to minimise this petrol disruption to the town.

“We want to get it right to ensure continued supply for the town well into the future.

“A service station contributes to the town’s economy and reputation as a welcoming destination.

“Lowes Petroleum’s commitment to the new site will tick all those boxes.”

Previous Strahan petrol station owner Michael Reid will continue to run the fuel stop.

Mr Reid said the business had continued to run without fuel services.

“Everyone who stops in for fishing tackle or other goods has asked me when I would have fuel again,” he said.

“Tourists look to the ‘local servo’ to get some insider knowledge: often asking where’s the best fishing spot or a good place to go four wheel driving.

“Together with Lowes, we are determined it will remain the community local hub it’s always been with the mechanical workshop, fishing tackle offerings and other retail goods with improved and upgraded services.”
