The Coalition has rejected Bill Shorten's "compromise" deal for another TV showdown with the Prime Minister, accusing him of avoiding "prime-time scrutiny".

Today, the ALP sent a letter to the National Press Club in Canberra, suggesting there be a debate on May 8 at lunchtime, where a panel of journalists would run it - one from the ABC, one from Nine and a journalist nominated by the NPC.

It comes after Leigh Sales tweeted they had been in discussions with Labor about holding a debate on the ABC for the last few months.

Both leaders will face-off on Monday night in a live TV debate on Seven, followed by a People's Forum hosted by Sky News and The Courier Mail on May 3.

Earlier, the Opposition Leader announced a Labor Government would spend more than half a billion dollars combatting family and domestic violence across the country.

Mrs Shorten has been a strong advocate in the fight against family violence in recent years, and a noticeable figure on the campaign trail.

Mr Shorten was introduced at today’s event as “Chloe Shorten’s husband”.

“In a crisis, words don’t put a roof over your head,” he said.

“Words don’t help kids in the morning and their mothers wondering where they will go.

“Words don’t help children at night or their mother trying to negotiate the unpredictable mood of an angry man.”
