Arson charges laid after fire destroys house

October 31, 10.45am: Police have charged a 68-year-old Sheffield woman with arson.

Officers allege she deliberately sparked a blaze that significantly damaged a home at Red Hills on Monday.

Emergency services were called to the residence on Montana Rd about 10.30am after reports of a house fire, police say.

Multiple Tasmania Fire Crews attended and contained the blaze.

Police allege a fire investigation determined the fire was deliberately lit.

Following Launceston CIB investigations, the woman was arrested and charged. She has since been bailed to appear in the Launceston Magistrates Court at a later date.

Tasmania Police senior inspector fired after Xmas party sex complaints

October 30, 5:10pm: A senior inspector has been fired after sexual misconduct complaints were made following a work-related Christmas party last year.

Tasmania Police Commissioner Donna Adams confirmed on Wednesday the officer had been dismissed after an extensive professional standards investigation was held into several internal complaints of sexual misconduct.

She said the function in question was held in Hobart in December, and was attended by colleagues.

“The Tasmanian community has high expectations of its policing service, and we are entrusted with significant powers to perform our duties to keep people safe,” Commissioner Adams said.

“The conduct of every police officer can impact on the community’s confidence in police to deliver this service.”

She said under the Police Service Act an officer’s employment could be terminated if the commissioner did not have confidence in their professional suitability.

Crews rush to North Hobart unit fire

Updated, October 30, 10.20am: Fire investigators have arrived to a North Hobart block of flats with the earlier blaze appearing under control.

A fire started in a unit at Condell Place earlier this morning with brigades from Hobart and Glenorchy rushing to the scene.

There is now no visible smoke billowing from the incident.

Tasmania Police was also at the scene.

9.30am: Fire fighters are working to contain a unit fire that was reportedly fully alight upon arrival.

Brigades from Hobart and Glenorchy arrived to the structure fire at Condell Place, North Hobart about 9.30am on Tuesday.

It remains too early for crews to report the extent of the damage and whether it impacted surrounding units.

P-plater detected 30km/h over limit on Bass Highway

October 29: A 19-year-old man was allegedly speeding 33km/h over the limit on the Bass Highway, West Ulverstone on Saturday.

Officers told the media on Tuesday, that the P2 licence holder was detected driving with four young passengers on board.

Police said the driver was issued an infringement notice that included fines in excess of $600 and five demerit points.

Inspector Adam Spencer said the driving behaviour of this sort was “incredibly dangerous”.

“Speeding is one of the Fatal 5 causes of death and serious injury on our roads, and novice drivers have been found to be over-represented in serious and fatal,” Inspector Spencer said.

“Remember, high-range speeding, will not be tolerated. If you witness dangerous or hooning vehicles, please report to police to enable us to investigate promptly to remove unsafe drivers from our roads.”

Cosmetics, clothes, alcohol: Man’s alleged stealing spree

October 28, 10:30am: A Lindisfarne man has been accused of stealing alcohol, cosmetics, clothes and more in a stealing spree across Hobart.

It’s believed the 26-year-old stole $3000 worth of goods from businesses in Hobart, New Town, North Hobart, Mornington and Rosny from September 13.

He’s been charged with nine counts of stealing, injuring property, possessing a thing used for the administration of a controlled drug, two counts of unlawful possession of a dangerous article in a public place, unlawful possession of property, 13 counts of breach of bail and two counts of failing to appear in court.

The man was due to appear at the Hobart Magistrates Court today.

Anyone with information can anonymously provide it to Crime Stoppers or Tasmania Police on 131 444.

Shots Fired at Bridgewater

October 27: Shots were fired at a home in Bridgewater about 10:30 on Saturday night, police say.

The gun was fired on Scott Road, in what authorities say was an isolate incident.

No one was injured.
