Beck Hutchinson-Catto was celebrating her birthday when she received a call no loved one ever wishes to hear.
“I didn’t get to spend the night with him,” she told the Mercury.
“I got the call about the accident instead.”
Just hours after posting a birthday message to her Facebook wall, Beck’s brother Simon was killed in a motorcycle accident on his street in Claremont last Thursday.
The 33-year-old had crashed around 5:20pm and despite efforts from members of the public and paramedics he died at the scene.
The tragedy comes after Beck lost another brother in a separate crash in 2004, before her mum passed away in 2020 and her dad in 2021.
“This has absolutely shattered me in more ways than I can say,”
“He was my best friend.”
“Losing mum and dad pretty much destroyed me and he [Simon] always put all his needs last,”
“He was a role model to me and he was there to help me through everything.”
Following his tragic death, a makeshift memorial for the father of three has been set up on the kerbside of Osprey Road.
“There’s been lots of friends visiting the pole he died at and I got a plaque made of a photo and his nick name Scatto. Lots of friends have left drinks and there’s a jumper there everyone signed.” said Beck.
Dozens of friends and family have also flooded social media with touching tributes to their ‘kind’ and ‘caring’ mate.
“A true blue bloody legend taken way too soon.” said friend Leigh Monks.
“You always had the best of intentions for everyone at the end of the day. Would give em the shirt off your back if they needed it.”
“Simon you were a massive part of a lot of peoples lives past and present. Such a kind hearted soul.” wrote Nicki Arnol.
“Everyone that has known you always felt such a special connection and bond with you.”
In light of the tragedy family friend Chris Webb has set up a GoFundMe with the hope of raising much needed funds to assist with funeral costs and help his three young children at such a devastating time.
“He was one of the best, and right now, I’m sure his only wish would be to know his three children and family are all taken care of.”
Simon will be farewelled in a funeral service at Millingtons Moonah this Thursday which will also be livestreamed online.
