Plans unveiled for new rooftop bar at Hobart’s Telegraph Hotel

A MUCH-loved Hobart pub is set undergo a facelift, including the creation of a rooftop bar, new plans have revealed.
The Telegraph Hotel on Hobart’s waterfront has been closed since April, and it was announced in July mainland company Australian Venue Co would take over its operation.
A proposal lodged with Hobart City Council shows the new owners want to give the two-storey building a makeover.
This includes the extension of the rooftop area to allow for a new partially enclosed dining and bar area above the existing building.
The new rooftop area would incorporate lounge, bench and dining and bar seating areas and would accommodate a maximum of about 284 patrons.
It is proposed to be open between 12pm and 1am, with a retractable awning designed to provide shelter.
Meanwhile, minor demolition and external facade works are proposed to renew the building, which would include the removal of the existing blue tiles and replaced by an external finish to match the remainder of the existing building.
The plans also reveal the owners want to affix an illuminated wall sign which would state “rooftop” as a way to “provide effective business identification for the new rooftop space”.
The existing Telegraph Hotel sign on the building is also proposed to be refurbished, but no change to the sign or content is being planned.
Melbourne-based planners Urbis Pty Ltd, on behalf of the proponents, argued the proposed works aligned with the relevant planning scheme.
“The proposal will encourage an attractive pedestrian environment by creating a lively atmosphere in an open environment,” the planners wrote.
“The proposed rooftop extension, minor facade works and signage will form a positive addition to the existing Telegraph Hotel and will enhance the activation of the area, while respecting the cultural significance of adjoining sites.”
In a statement, Australian Venue Co chief executive Paul Waterson said the company was still in the planning stages of renovation and hoped to re-open early next year.
“The Telegraph Hotel is a historic venue in the heart of Hobart’s tourist precinct, so we’re working hard to enhance the customer experience while celebrating the venue’s history and character,’’ he said.
The pub, a popular watering hole for university students, was established in 1858 as the Electric Telegraph Hotel and was renamed the Telegraph in 1877.
The plans are open for public comment until October 25.
