New deadline for decision on Kangaroo Bay development

The fate of an $80m development will be decided at a later date, after the developer, Chambroad, asked for an extension of time.

A decision on the future of the Kangaroo Bay development will be made in December, with the Clarence Council deferring its verdict after the developer announced it was dumping plans for a hospitality school.

Chambroad had until October 12 to substantially commence its plans for a hotel along with a tourism and hospitality school.

But it recently revealed it longer intended to build the school at the site because it was unable to secure an educational provider.

The company now hopes to solely push ahead with its hotel development, but has missed the deadline to substantially commence construction.

It requested an extension of time.

On Monday a Clarence Council spokesman said the council and Chambroad had agreed to defer a decision on the extension of time until December 21, so an alternative design can be properly considered.

“Chambroad will provide council with a briefing and details of its alternative proposal, and Council will have until 21 December 2022 to accept the alternative proposal and grant an extension of time or refuse both,” the spokesman said.

Earlier this month Chambroad Australia director and general manager Finely Zhang said construction of the hotel would begin in 12-18 months.

He said if the extension of time was granted, but Chambroad was unable to meet its commitments, the land would be handed back to Clarence Council.

The company has flagged it has an operator in mind to run the hotel, should the extension be granted.

A decision on the new design and extension of time will be made by a new council, with voting in the local government elections currently underway.
