A NEWLY-branded vessel that will soon ferry passengers back and forth across the River Derwent has arrived at its new home on the Hobart waterfront.
A one-year trial of the service, which was a commitment in the Hobart City Deal, is set to start within weeks, according to the state government.
Infrastructure and Transport Minister Michael Ferguson said the operators, Roche Brothers (Navigators) would soon start sea trials while infrastructure works are underway at the Bellerive wharf and new ramps built for all-abilities access.
“It’s great to see the Derwent Ferry in the water with its new branding in readiness for the Hobart to Bellerive service,’’ Mr Ferguson said.
“I look forward to the ferry beginning operating in coming weeks.
“It will operate during weekday travel times, with a one-way crossing expected to take 20 to 25 minutes.”
RACT chief advocacy officer Garry Bailey welcomed the arrival of the ferry, but said accompanying infrastructure needed to be done right.
“For this new service to be as effective as possible and help reduce traffic congestion, it needs to be part of an integrated service with the right infrastructure in place to coincide with the trial,’’ he said.
The ferry has capacity to carry 107 passengers and has storage for 15 bicycles.
Travel will be free to commuters with a Metro greencard or a bicycle.
