Elite rower Simon Burgess faces Hobart court on assault and property damage charges

A decorated Tasmanian rower has faced court in Hobart on assault and property damage charges.

A decorated Tasmanian rower has faced a Hobart court on assault and property damage charges.

Three-time Olympian Simon Peter Burgess, 56, appeared in the Hobart Magistrates Court on Monday after being charged with common assault and injuring property.

Burgess is one of Tasmania’s most successful rowers, having first been selected to represent Australia at the world championships held at Lake Barrington in 1990 where he won a bronze medal in the quad scull.

He would go on to win two gold medals at the meet in 1991 and 1997, and also won two Olympic silver medals from three appearance at Atlanta in 1996, Sydney in 2000, and Athens in 2004.

Burgess was named the Tasmanian Institute of Sport’s Athlete of the Year three times, in 1997, 1999, and 2000.

Burgess’s application for bail was refused by Magistrate Andrew McKee, who remanded the defendant in custody to reappear incourt on Friday.
