He is wearing red pants and something white is obscuring his face but this knife-wielding “Santa” has sparked fears in a Gold Coast suburb.

The shirtless man was caught on CCTV carrying a large hunting knife outside a Lakeland Ky, Broadbeach Waters home about 9pm on Wednesday night.

The white T-shirt over his face and bright red shorts are reminiscent of St Nick.

A Queensland Police spokeswoman said they were aware of the image but had not received a formal complaint about the incident.

The photo of the man with the knife outside the Broadbeach Waters home surfaced on social media on Thursday morning.

Benowa Waters Residents Committee spokesman Mannu Kala said he posted the picture after being sent the image by the suburb’s privately-funded security guard.

He said the security guard had asked at the time to put patrols in Benowa Waters on hold to go to the alleged attempted break-in in Broadbeach Waters.

“It’s scary looking at that knife,” he said.

Mr Kala said residents in Benowa Waters began funding security patrols after concerns about the number of break-ins by juveniles.

It was working to a point but they could only have security at night, he said.

“We had an instance having a kid take a car and then going through the drive-through and spending $9 on the credit card,” he said.

Mr Kala said attempted break-ins were still almost daily.

“Someone is going to get killed,” he said.

Mr Kala said from what had been taken, thieves were targeting cars and car keys but also jewellery and other small valuable items.

He called for changes to laws in dealing with juvenile crime, including tougher penalties.
