We asked the Coast’s top 16 Insta-famous hairdressers what makes them different to other salons and how they leverage social media platforms to their advantage. See their tips here.

The Bulletin asked the Gold Coast’s top 16 hairdressers what makes them different to other salons, and how they leverage social media platforms like Instagram to their advantage.

Tips range from using social media to showcase their work, interact with customers and build relationships.

Chasing new trends, creating epic original content – reels, big transformations, they’re all part and parcel of a successful social media following, and a successful business.

Here are our hot tips from the most successful Instagram hairdressers.

“In a collective space there are nine different businesses all freelancing and in our beautiful salon space we offer hair, brows, lashes, beauty services, make up and injectables.

“Instagram is how I showcase my work by sharing amazing transformations.

“Clients love that they can see some previous work before coming into have their hair done.

“I try and post most days but I definitely get busy doing hair too.

“I love that there is an online portfolio of my work,” Ms Maree said.

15. Corey Bromley – @coreybromleyhair

Mr Bromley specialises blonde, brunette, balayage and hair therapy and said he prides himself on creating a fun atmosphere for his clients.

“I think what makes me, me is that my client become friends,” he said.

“I think it’s extremely important to build a relationship because there needs to be trust.

“When I first started at the studio upstairs I really put in hours and hours of content.

“But I do think it’s something that I struggle with at the same time.

“Some months I do more than others but I haven’t figured out a scheduling or anything yet,” he said.

“We love seeing how happy our clients are when they see their finished look and walk out with that stunning Instagram hair everyone wants to achieve,” she said.

Ms Vidler is a blonde specialist – and while she’s not taking on new clients at the moment, her Instagram aesthetic and hair transformations are mesmerising.

“I pride myself on creating wholesome connections with all my clients,” she said.

“I believe I am different to other hairdressers in the sense that I’m raw and completely honest about each individuals hair journey.

While Instagram was a useful marketing tool, Ms Vidler said, it may be creating some bigger dangers in the beauty industry.

“I feel like you are constantly trying to chase new trends and create epic original content and if you don't hit that bar you will lose out,” she said.

“In saying that I do love creating a fun reel of documenting a big transformation because that's what makes my heart happy.

“I try to give myself an hour a day, four times a week to engage with other hairdressers to show love and support on Instagram.”

Gold Coast’s own holistic hair salon owner Phoebe Evers said they pride themselves on having low tox, vegan friendly products.

“We are about hair health and creating beautiful results while you relax in our sanctuary,” she said.

“Healthy hair is good hair and hood hair is healthy hair.

“Instagram has helped me reach clients that are looking for exactly what we have to offer.

It’s a great platform for people to get an inside to your vibe before visiting.

Ms Evers puts daily work into keeping her Instagram looking sharp.

“I spend roughly an hour a day on social media sharing our tips and planning posts,” she said.

11. Sabrina Neugebauer – @hairheavenemporium

Hair Heaven Emporium was the 2021 winner of the Bulletin’s best hairdresser competition.

Owner Sabrina Neugebauer said her top three style requests were blonde, balayage and face framing.

“I think it’s fun that trends are repeating and there are always little changes which is the most exciting part of hairdressing.

“We pride ourselves on the fact that we focus on each individual client.

“We don’t rush our service as we want them to experience the hair heaven experience.”

The benefits of social media are huge, according to Ms Neugebauer.

“Instagram is amazing, we love creating content and giving our clients value and knowledge about their hair concerns,” she said.

10. Kathy Richardson – @hairbykathyrichardson

“I think the one thing that makes us stand out is our passion for creative colour,” she said.

“Social media is a great tool to showcase our work to our audience.

“I take a lot of photos of my colour applications.

“Although we don’t post every day we love our interaction with stories,” she said.

Owner Courtney Ball said after 15 years in the industry she decided to start her own business in 2017.

“My salon is seriously one of a kind situated right on Kirra beachfront,” she said.

“I am still as in love with hairdressing as I was the day I got my apprenticeship.

“What sets us apart is the homely vibe the salon gives.”

“Honestly I built my whole business from Instagram.

“It’s better than a business card because our potential clients are able to view our work.

“It is also great for inspiration, sharing tips, tricks and advice as well as to build our community.

“We post on our stories most days and post to the grid every 1-2 days.

“Reels have been such a fun way to promote our business too.”

Owner Tatiana Pearl, 21, said she left school to build a business with her sister in 2015 and was proud to see how far they have come.

“I definitely pride myself on my effort to make my clients feel beautiful and confident inside and out,” she said.

“Instagram has helped our business in many ways over the years.

“Connecting us with clients, exposing our content and helping our small family business grow.

“Having a business on Instagram is definitely a daily investment.

“Having to make sure our followers are engaged and up to date with our content,” Ms Pearl said. said.

“We pride ourselves on making our clients feel like the best version of themselves,” she said.

“Instagram has allowed me to grow a brand and show the incredible hair my staff create.

“It’s a platform that not only brings clients inspiration but also motivates and inspires the fellow hair community.”

“We have a solid team that our guests know will always be there to give 100 per cent.

“It has allowed us to showcase our style and communicate with our guests so they are updated on the spot of trends and products.

“We have a dedicated in-salon marketing co-ordinator to create content and look after all things Instagram related – it’s a full-time job,” they said.

“I am extremely particular about protecting the health of the hair because so many traditional hairdressing practices can really damage the integrity of our natural hair,” she said.

“I strategically use products and colours that create bright, live-in look that is long-lasting and easier to maintain.

“The space itself at Milly sets us apart from the crowd, with spacious and minimalistic interiors, high-ceilings, and atmospheric archways creating a relaxing environment.

“Instagram has been incredibly influential in boosting business exposure.

“Last year I was working out of my garage at home and although I had a strong client base already when moving to our space at Burleigh Heads, my increasing Instagram following took this to the next level.”

Ms Hextell will also soon be opening a salon in Palm Beach.

“It sounds cliche but Instagram has helped us stay connected.

“Oscar Oscar Salons is a nationwide company, but a tight-knit family, so throughout those times where we were unable to visit salons, we heavily relied on those platforms.

“Instagram was a huge part of last year for us because we kept connected and were able to spread the work to support out local businesses.

“Collectively, our Instagram accounts are updating 24/7.

“Almost everybody who is a part of Oscar Oscar Salons has an Instagram account to share their work, each other’s work and make announcements on exciting events happening.”
