IT HAS been labelled a “dream start” to the season for Newtown & Chilwell, who emerged victors in a tough match against Leopold.

The Lions managed to close the gap to seven points in the second half, but the Eagles were able to pull away and win 11.9 (75) to 8.7 (55).

Newtown & Chilwell coach Damien McMahon said to reach the Easter break 2-0 was an ideal start to the year.

“It’s always important to get yourself in the top half of the ladder as soon as you can, which we’ve done so that’s a dream start to the year,” he said.

“Last year we had nine games straight without having a break, so having Easter a couple of weeks in and a bye is really good for us because Leopold is always a physical game.

“They really embarrassed us the last time we played them, they smashed us, so it was good to get on the other end of it.”

Eagles forward Lachlan Bond continued his good form with another five goals at Saturday, including the last two Newtown & Chilwell goals in the last quarter.

Lions star Mitchell Burgess will miss a substantial period of football after suffering a hamstring injury in the second quarter.

Leopold coach Garry Hocking said his side put themselves at a disadvantage from the start.

“We don’t want to be a team that has to come from behind to win,” he said.

“Obviously we did it last week to get over against Geelong West, but we certainly want to put teams on the back foot early and we weren’t able to do that today.

“We were behind pretty much from the start of the game, and we were scrambling to try to get back and win the game, and I don’t really want to be in that situation.”
