Bellarine Football League: Modewarre defeated Queenscliff in Saturday’s matches

The scoreline indicates a major loss, but both Queenscliff and Modewarre coaches said it was much closer than the 50-point blowout suggests. Read why.

There were plenty of positives on either side of the changerooms despite a lopsided victory for Modewarre against Queenscliff.

Modewarre ultimately ran out 50-point victors, but not before Queenscliff challenged the hosts and impressed the coach.

“I thought they played an outstanding game, their pressure was constant and their ball use was very clean,” Modewarre coach Chris Hickey said.

“We like to be challenged, now ultimately we won by 50 points which is really pleasing, but the game was much closer than that.

“Queenscliff are going to win a lot of games of footy this season, we were really impressed by them.”

Boom recruit Aaron Black paired well with Modewarre’s Connor Joseph for the Power, with the pair slotting five goals each.

The former AFL footballer was one of Modewarre’s best in his debut for the club, while Queenscliff’s Lachie Kidd was a key player for the Coutas as he kicked two goals and looked dangerous throughout the match.

While the result did not go the way of Queenscliff, coach Rory Nicol said he could not fault his side’s effort.

“I thought the boys put in an outstanding body of work, we knew we were going to be up against it in that last quarter but the intent never dropped,” he said.

“There were a number of young kids in the side who don’t have more than 10 games in senior footy yet, but they were playing at a really high level for most of the game.

“You want to win every match, it was disappointing to go down by 50 because it doesn’t reflect the game itself, it was actually a tight loss.

“I thought all the pieces were there.”
