Defenders stamped contenders as Saints maul Tigers

St Mary’s has stamped itself as the team to beat in 2022 after the reigning premiers ran away with a massive round 2 win against contenders Colac.

The highly-anticipated clash ended with a margin larger than expected, with the Saints winning 16.15 (111) to 8.9 (57).

Colac and St Mary’s have a fierce recent history, with the two sides meeting in the last-played grand final, where the Saints won in a two-point thriller in 2019.

But the Saints were too good at Saturday’s contest, leading at every break and eventually running out comfortable 54-point winners.

St Mary’s co-coach Glenn Keast said on K Rock 95.5 it was important to get a good win against a strong side.

“I reckon we all know the competition is pretty even, even yesterday we had a few moments where... Colac got some momentum,” he said on Sunday.

“We obviously knew we were going to have a week off for Easter so it was a good opportunity to get a couple of wins on the board, reset.

“We’ve got a few challenging games in the next three weeks, North Shore are going to be certainly better than they’ve been, South Barwon on the Sunday, then Grovedale.”

St Mary’s forward Pat Dowling kicked four goals against the Tigers after slotting eight in round 1 against St Albans.

Ball-winning midfielder Harry Benson was named in St Mary’s best performers, as was Trent McMullan, Max Augerinos and Ryley Hall.

Colac co-coach Darcy Lang was his side’s only multiple goal kicker with two goals, while Jarryn McCormack and Henry Walsh were named among the team’s best during the loss.

St Mary’s will hold onto top spot after two rounds and will play North Shore at home after the Easter break.

Meanwhile, Colac will drop to 1-1 and will play Bell Park in round 3, after the Dragons beat St Albans by 101 points.

Six-goal quarter secures Giant come-from-behind win

GEELONG West has kicked six last-quarter goals to overcome Grovedale Tigers despite trailing by 11 points at the final break.

The Giants trailed the Tigers entering the final quarter, but three goals to forward Jacson Collins has helped steer the home side to victory in blustery conditions.

Giants coach Greg Mellor said the side earned the win in the final term but it was a battle to get into a winning position.

“We were not using the ball well early, they were stretching us a bit and we were turning the ball over a bit,” he said.

“Most of the scoring seemed to happen at the one end, we were able to convert down in the last quarter, it certainly seemed to get stronger as the day went on.”

Collins kicked three goals in a final-term burst which gave the Giants the lead, while ruckman Tylar Watts was clean when the ball hit the ground.

Mellor said Collins and Watts turned the game for the Giants.

“Collins gave us a really good target, and was able to convert nicely with his three goals,” he said.

“Wattsy was really pleasing too, he was really sore during the game but he was able to lift in that last with some big tackles.”

Grovedale coach Daniel Fraser said it was disappointing to start the season with two losses.

“It’s not what you plan for, but it’s disappointing because we’re lacking confidence and not playing good footy,” he said.

“We’ve still been competitive despite being a little bit off our best.”

St Joseph’s survive inaccurate North Shore

St Joseph’s held off a last-quarter North Shore attack, running out 13-point winners at Windsor Park.

North Shore trailed by 40 points heading into the fourth term, but kicked 4.7 in the final quarter to St Joseph’s four points.

Jack Mentha and Ayden Gras kicked two goals each for St Joseph’s in the 10.16 (76) to 8.15 (63) win.

South Barwon flexes muscles against Lara

Despite a close opening quarter, the Swans have pulled away to a 98-point win against Lara.

After being just one goal ahead at the first break, Andrew Boseley kicked eight goals in the 19.16 (130) to 4.8 (32) demolition.

Dragons ring the bell on St Albans bout

After a round 1 loss last week, Bell Park has run out 101-point winners against St Albans.

Leading by 33 points at quarter time, the Dragons put the foot down and finished the match as 20.18 (139) to 5.7 (37) victors.
