WERRIBEE Centrals has continued its scintillating start to the GDFNL season, upsetting the highly fancied East Geelong by five goals on Saturday.

The Centurions produced a powerful defensive display to bring an end to the Eagles’ 13-game winning streak with a 31-26 win.

The Eagles were choked across the court early by the committed, full-court defence of the Centurions and they could never get their preferred flowing game going.

East Geelong was unable to capitalise on scoring opportunities in the desperate final quarter and lost the low-scoring encounter.

Amanda O’Malley led the strong Werribee defence, pressuring the Eagles shooters into error, as they returned a poor 50 per cent conversion rate.

Stephanie Boyce and Molly Neeson teamed up to be as effective in defence for East and their battle with Werribee goalers Ellie Vincent and Jenni Rothery was a highlight within the contest.

In other matches, Bannockburn outlasted a determined Corio to win 44-36 in an entertaining contest.

Erin Dillon returned to her very best in defence for the Tigers after a two-year lay-off.

The Belmont Lions took advantage of their captain Rachael Kirtley’s dominance to win 63-24 over Bell Post Hill.

Angelique Ross dropped in 42 goals for the winners.

North Geelong again overcame a sluggish start to pull away from Inverleigh in a hard-fought 52-46 win.

Thomson was pushed by Anakie in a lack lustre affair, with 17-year-old wing attack Chelsea Oakley providing the highlight for the winners with an impressive performance.

Bec Lebish also continued her outstanding form in defence for the Tigers.

GFL WRAP

The project of blooding the youth is under way at Newtown & Chilwell as the side continues its historic winning streak.

The Eagles ran out 78-33 winners against the Leopold Lions in the 2022 Pride Cup match at Sunday.

Newtown & Chilwell coach Jason Woolley said the competition had improved during the Covid interruptions.

“There’s going to be sides that miss finals that probably deserve to be playing and would make it almost any other year,” he said.

“The players see the depth around the league, the mix in the (Geelong) Cougars squad is really even for each side and they all compete with each other every week.”

Woolley said the Eagles were injecting younger players in an attempt to keep the undefeated streak going.

“We’ve been trying to get some younger players in the side in the last few years, obviously we’re an older side now,” he said.

“Mimi Lockwood played a full game in the centre, she’s one who’s got a lot of talent and is really going to take the club forward into the future.”

During Saturday’s matches, it was a match full of cliches for Geelong West’s netball team as it powered to a 71-12 victory against Grovedale.

The visiting side stood no match for the Giants, which powered away in the first quarter and never looked like relinquishing control of the match.

Geelong West coach Jill Leader praised her side, and said it was a true “four-quarter performance”.

“I know it sounds really cliche but we were after four consistent quarters and we did that today with our scoring,” she said.

“We’ve also been really working hard on our connections, so when we do get a turnover we can turn defence into attack and the linking worked really well for us today.

“It’s another cliche, but we had everyone on the team playing their part, which was really exciting to see.”

Newtown & Chilwell will play Leopold on Sunday.

In the Colac & District netball league, South Colac and Alvie drew in dramatic scenes after Alvie held an 11-goal lead at half time.

Alvie’s Georgia Robinson (23) and Jaymie Lowe (21) scored all of the Swans’ goals in the comeback, with the match finishing in a 44-44 draw.

Apollo beat Otway Districts 37-31 in the Hawks’ first win of the season, while Birregurra beat Colac Imperials 50-39.

Lorne fell short of Irrewarra-Beeac 37-46, while Simpson was too good for the Western Eagles, winning that clash 48-29.

In the Bellarine netball league, Ocean Grove beat Anglesea convincingly, scoring 55 goals to 29.
