A Barwon Heads man who allegedly sexually assaulted a woman returned to her home and told her he was going to cut her pets’ heads off in front of her young children, a court has heard.

A “frightened” Armstrong Creek woman told police she was pushed into a bedroom by Charles Lyon who she had let into the home because she thought he was there to visit her housemates.

Mr Lyon allegedly pulled out a pair of secateurs, demanded the woman put her finger between the blades and told her he was going to “chop it off” if she told anyone what happened.

Mr Lyon appeared in Geelong Magistrates Court on Wednesday and was denied bail.

He has not yet entered a plea.

The 43-year-old is facing several charges, including sexual assault, false imprisonment, theft, criminal damage, threat to inflict serious injury, threat to destroy property, and committing an offence while on bail.

The woman alleged to police Mr Lyon pushed her so she was lying on her stomach.

He allegedly had his belt buckle and fly undone.

The court heard Mr Lyon allegedly told the woman to lift her top up and tried to do it himself by tugging at her clothing.

He then allegedly released his hold on the woman, grabbed electronics from the room and told her to meet him at a 7-Eleven.

Eight days later, Mr Lyon allegedly returned to the home with her electronics inside a grocery bag and two items covered in a blanket.

His partner was allegedly waiting outside in a car.

The woman claimed Mr Lyon followed her inside with the concealed items, which he allegedly said was an axe and a machete.

While in front of children, Mr Lyon allegedly told the woman he was going to “cut your arms off” and cut her dogs “heads off”.

When the woman was allegedly told to get a phone from Mr Lyon’s partner outside, she fled to a neighbour’s house to seek refuge.

Police located Mr Lyon one day later in Moriac following a string of alleged thefts in Barwon Heads, Jan Juc and Torquay.

Prosecution alleged the woman was “extremely frightened” and Mr Lyon could be a danger to her if released on bail.

Magistrate Michelle Hodgson denied bail and said there were “deeply concerning allegations of significant violence”.

“(The allegations) display a very high level of violence and a lack of regard for those persons present, in particular (because it) occurred in the presence of children,” Ms Hodgson said.
