The Department of Public Health has confirmed another Covid related death, with 18 now recorded in Tasmania since 2020.

The death is the state’s fifth since borders reopened on December 15.

State growth minister Roger Jaensch said the woman died at an aged care facility in the state’s south.

“The deceased person is a woman in here late 80s, with a number of underlying medical conditions who was being cared for in a residential aged care facility,” Mr Jaensch said.

“The woman tested positive for Covid on the 23rd of January and Covid cannot at this stage be ruled out as a contributing factor of her death.

“These unfortunate circumstances are again a reminded that Covid is with us, it’s real and we need to be vigilant while moving through this phase.”

Whether or not the woman was vaccinated is yet to be confirmed.

In the 24 hours to 8pm on Saturday, 594 new cases were recorded, 188 confirmed from PCR tests and 406 from RATs.

20 people with Covid are in hospital, an increase of three on Saturdays’s figures, with 10 hospital patients treated specifically for Covid and 10 being treated for unrelated medical conditions.

The number of patients in the ICU remains at one.

There are 332 people participating in the COVID@home program and 18 in a community case management facility.

There are currently 4978 active cases in Tasmania
