TASMANIA has confirmed eight new cases of coronavirus, bringing the state’s tally to 36.
Director of Public Health Mark Veitch said seven of the cases are from southern Tasmania, with one from the North.
Public Health Services has begun contacting the eight people to investigate their movements, and to identify and contact any of their close contacts so they can be placed in self-quarantine.
Six of the cases had recently been aboard cruise ships that arrived interstate.
The remaining two had recently travelled to Tasmania from overseas.
Dr Veitch said there remained no evidence of community transmission in Tasmania.
A further update will be provided on Wednesday.
“The situation with coronavirus is changing regularly,” Dr Veitch said.
Tasmania has conducted 1139 COVID-19 tests to date.
Of the 28 previously confirmed cases, 17 were overseas travellers and 11 were cruise ships passengers.
Three sufferers have already recovered.
The State Government last week announced those caught flouting self-isolation rules could be penalised with fines of up to $16,800 or six months in prison. Anyone requiring more information about coronavirus should contact the National Coronavirus Health Information Line on 1800 020 080.
