Hobart Mum Maria Koumoundouros has been crowned Tasmania’s best cake maker in a poll voted by The Mercury’s readers.
The local’s love for baking came at a time when she needed it most. Suffering post-natal depression after the birth of her first son in 2013, Koumoundouros found therapy in the kitchen.
“I just kind of started baking and cooking. It kept my mind busy and I never stopped.”
The expert cake maker hand sculpts edible works of art that replicate real-life cars, pets and even KFC feasts.
“I made a lifelike cake of a KFC feed for my husband’s 40th birthday. When I took it out he and his friends didn’t actually realise it was a cake!”
In an impressive nod to her business name, the Queen herself has also baked for royalty.
“I was contacted by this event company and asked if I could make a cake and drop it off at the Saffire Freycinet resort. They wouldn’t tell me who it was for and then after I did it they rang me up and told me I had created a cake for the Prince and Princess of Arabia!”
Cake Queen Oz was one of five finalists who were in the running for the top gong. Other favourites included Graceful Baking by Tianna Grace Takawe, Scrumptious by Sophie Wilson, Cake a Chance on Belinda and My Sweet Tucker by Toni Tucker.
