The offers are expected to come thick and fast for Hurricanes hero Mitch Owen who has “a couple of deals” in the pipeline including a stint in America with Washington Freedom in the USA T20 series from May.
Following his record-equaling 39-ball century in the Hurricanes’ Big Bash final win over Sydney Thunder two weeks ago, Owen, 23, has already found his way onto thew international T20 circuit.
Having re-signed with the Cane Train for the next three seasons, Owen was snapped up by Paarl Royals in the South Africa competition as a replacement former England captain Joe Root.
On his return to Hobart this week, Owen says he hopes to “fill my winter” with international white ball contracts, having already signed a second deal.
“I’m lucky enough to have a deal at Washington so I’ll head over there at the end of May, but I’m not exactly sure on the dates,” he said.
“It’s a good opportunity and I can’t wait for that.”
Owen’s manager is working on more opportunities behind the scenes, but the IPL horse might have bolted for this year.
“I open up Instagram and Facebook and see all these IPL replacements and all this sort of stuff, and it’s new to me,” he said.
“I haven’t got any deals coming up, well a couple, but none of the big ones like I’m reading on social media.”
The Australian summer is at the top of Owen’s priorities.
“The most important thing to me is playing for the Hurricanes and Tassie,” he said.
“I’ll let this franchise and T20 stuff…I feel like I can fill my winter with that sort of stuff.
“The SA20 is quite a big comp so to get an opportunity in that, I feel like I had to take it.
“The organisation [Cricket Tasmania] was encouraging me to take it.
“I was disappointed to miss a few games for Tassie but I know in my career it is going to help me progress.”
The Paarl Royals did not experience the fireworks Owen created in the Big Bash.
“It was a great experience,” he said.
“Unfortunately, we didn’t have the success, or me having the personal success, I would have liked and that we (Hurricanes) had in the Big Bash.
“But it was great learnings and a great experience.”
It has been a whirlwind few weeks for the newly-minted franchise cricket player, having won the Big Bash title off his own bat and then flying to South Africa the next day.
“I had a night of no sleeping and then straight on the plane,” he said.
“There was a little bit of reflection time on the plane but to get over there and straight into it — it was a new environment, meeting new people, trying to buy into what the Royal were doing because they were having so much success.
“I’ve been back for a few days and it has all settled down and it’s now probably the time I can sit back and reflect on the past few weeks.”
Owen is determined not to get ahead of himself.
“There’s obviously a bit more going on but for me it’s just about keeping it simple,” he said.
“I’ve got a one-dayer for Tassie on Thursday, which all my focus is going towards, and Shield cricket next week,” he said.
“The external stuff will take care of itself.”
Owen has been confirmed to return to the Tigers one-day squad on Thursday against Victoria. Joining him will be Beau Webster who is back from Australian Test duties in Sri Lanka.
Tom Rogers, who also played in South Africa’s competition, has also returned.
Gabe Bell has been rested.
