Coronavirus: The state of our borders

Tasmanians are about to gain access to one of Australia’s hottest summer destinations on the cheap with a new sale from Qantas.

The sale launched at 11am AEDT today featuring four new weekly return flights between Hobart and Brisbane from December 4.

More than 800 passengers per flight will be able to travel the new Qantas route at the sale price of $179 one-way – but they’ll only nab the discount if they book within the next three days.

Qantas Domestic and International CEO Andrew David said the organisation was “stepping up” their effort to assist struggling tourism provider with the return sale flights every Monday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

“Ongoing international border closures mean Australians are more inspired than ever to explore their own backyard,” he said.

“We want to help kick start that boom and help more travellers experience Tasmania’s unspoilt landscape, fine foods and fresh produce.

The announcement follows Qantas and Jetstar’s recent launches of several new flight services, including Jetstar’s Hobart to Gold Coast route.

Both airlines are organising flights between Hobart and Sydney in anticipation of a decision yet to be announced on allowing New South Wales residents into Tasmania.

People booking through Qantas will now be able to move their flights free of charge as part of COVID-19 changes.

Regional Tourism Assistant Minister Jonno Duniam said the move was “one of the best ways to start a summer”.

“This summer is going to be critical in our state’s tourism recovery and this announcement gives us a flying start,” he said.

“I can’t wait for Queenslanders to see for themselves the best beaches our country has to offer.”

Premier Peter Gutwein said removing the barriers for visitors would be “vital” for connecting Tasmanians with their loved ones interstate and rebuilding our tourism economy.

“As an island destination, air and sea access will always be the lifeblood of Tasmanian tourism,” he said.
