LOW-cost surgical abortions will again be available in Hobart from October, Health Minister Michael Ferguson says.
Mr Ferguson told State Parliament on Tuesday that negotiations with a private provider were complete.
The last provider closed in December last year, leaving women with no choice but to travel interstate for the procedure.
The closure of the private clinic sparked outrage among many women’s groups and led to a rally on Parliament Lawns in April calling for accessible abortions.
ABORTION ADVOCATES DEMAND STATEWIDE ACCESS
Australian Medical Association state president John Davis said he knew of cases where women were going interstate for abortions because of the Government’s restrictions on access.
Mr Ferguson said: “We recognise that it is a deeply difficult decision for a woman considering an unwanted pregnancy.
“We provide extensive support and assistance at this time, through both public and community health services, whatever her final decision may be.
“In the event that a termination is wanted and required, the Department of Health has now entered into a five-year agreement with a new private provider to deliver low-cost surgical termination of pregnancy services in Tasmania.
“It is only contingent on licensing and accreditation requirements.”
He said funding would be available to help women with travel.
