Popular Sandy Bay Cafe Sisterhood is set to reopen its doors following months of closure

A popular cafe that has faced more than its fair share of setbacks over the past year is now ready to reopen its doors.

A ‘whole lot more freedoms’ available to Australians as of June 1

POPULAR Sandy Bay eatery Sisterhood was well prepared for an April reopening following an eight-month flood-linked closure. Then COVID-19 hit.

Cafe owner Yasmin Chung said staff were excited to reopen business doors on Monday after what has been a trying time which saw the shop closed last August after an underfloor drain was found to cause devastating flooding damage.

“We were aiming for an April 1 reopening but then obviously coronavirus happened and that pushed back our plans,” she said.

“It became pretty apparent we wouldn’t open during the early months of the pandemic because of the scale of our venue. So we just took the foot off the pedal a bit and waited for Stage 2 restrictions to come in.”

Ms Chung, who also saw her Hobart Mazbah cafe closed for two months during the pandemic, said times have been tough but blue skies were ahead.

“Yes, it’s been challenging but it brings opportunity,” she said.

“The challenges have been felt right across the board. We can’t change what’s happened, we’re just looking forward.

“There has been a groundswell of community support and we can’t wait to reopen Sisterhood.”

Ms Chung said a planned reopening party at her 140-seat Sandy Bay cafe – which was set to include free peach tattoos for those eager – has been put on hold until after COVID-19 restrictions ease.

Sisterhood reopens to customers on Monday at 7.30am.
