A CHILD-FREE water view retreat with an outdoor hot tub and sauna in the bush at Tinderbox is the most lusted-over Tasmanian listing on Airbnb — and a wedding proposal hotspot.

Aerie Retreat, which opened in 2018, has been the most “wish-listed” property by Tasmanians on the short-stay accommodation website over the past two months, thanks no doubt to impressive photos of the giant timber hot tub on the deck and spectacular ocean views.

Owner and builder, Braye Sutherland, said the pared-back one-bedroom apartment with handmade furniture had been fully booked since covid restrictions lifted.

“It’s very simple, everything you need and nothing you don’t, so there’s no TV and no crap,” Mr Sutherland said, adding that kids were not allowed.

“No kids, no weddings and no parties. Quite often Aerie is the chosen location for special stays including proposals, birthdays and anniversaries. We get about two proposals a month.”

Next on the most longed-for list is a timber and rammed-earth cabin perched on a headland at Seymour, north of Bicheno on the East Coast, followed by a stone and timber house at Rocky Hills, just south of Swansea.

Also included in the top 10 is a much more humble abode at Nubeena, with a regular outdoor bath and rustic furnishings, as well as an 1840s sandstone cottage at Mole Creek.

Derek Nolan from Airbnb said the popularity of the listings showed how travel behaviour had evolved in recent years.

“Australians are craving calm surroundings and a sense of being among the great outdoors,” Mr Nolan said.

“Tassie’s regional areas, with their pristine natural beauty and unique, family-friendly local attractions, are perfect for anyone looking to get out and explore their state.”
