Life with coronavirus through the eyes of a child

A BEVY of talented 12- to 13-year-olds graced the stage of the Theatre Royal yesterday [Thursday] in Day 7 of the inaugural Hobart City Dance Challenge.

The more than 240 novice dancers competed in both jazz solos, and song and dance solos before a sold-out audience in a year where the pandemic has forced the closure of other dance eisteddfods.

Event co-coordinator John X said the depth of talent from the performers is impressive.

“The skill level of some of these girls is phenomenal. Some of them are world-class dancers and when you watch it, it’s amazing to see the creativity,” he said.

More than 1100 performers representing 11 dance schools are registered to compete in the nine-day event – held over three sessions a day to meet Covid restrictions – which culminates in a dance championship on Saturday evening.

Styles of dances be judged include funk, jazz, tap, ballet, lyrical, contemporary and hip hop.

Mr X says the competition has brought to the stage some of the state’s best dancers.

“The kids are so talented and to be able to have this avenue to display what they’ve been working on this year rather than only being in a rehearsal room is just great,” Mr X said.

He says the best is still to come, with Friday and Saturday a showcase of senior dancers.

“It heats up and gets more and more entertaining as we get closer to the end, where it’s the best of the best.”
