TASMANIAN products are fetching a premium price in Hong Kong’s largest supermarket chain.
Businessman David Meredith, the grunt behind Hobart institutions The Glass House, Brooke Street Larder and South Hobart’s The Islington Hotel, is successfully promoting local produce on the shelves of supermarket Park’n’Shop.
“Tasmania is very famous in Hong Kong for produce, particularly seafood. When you say Tasmania, it’s understood to be a place of exceptional food,” Mr Meredith said.
“The Tasmanian name signals quality.”

Mr Meredith’s export company Tas’Mania arranges weekly shipments of premium products to an eager Hong Kong market.
In peak season, a 2kg box of cherries from Reid Fruits can fetch as much as $100.
The success of the business is in the marketing —behind each product is a Tasmanian producer whose story Mr Meredith tells. There’s brand information, product information and the opportunity for brand owners to head over to his “Tasmania, Taste the Fresh” pop-ups to meet consumers.
Tas’Mania is promoting salmon in the lead-up to Christmas, cherries for Chinese New Year in February, and honey for Easter.
