A NEW cafe, gallery, retail and events space at New Norfolk aims to eventually host gigs, cooking classes, art classes, philosophy groups, book clubs, life drawing and even drag bingo.

artHouse New Norfolk opens on Monday on the main road of the popular tourist town in the Derwent Valley.

It is the brainchild of co-owners Nicola Rouleston — who has a background in fine art, hospitality and retail — and David Basser, who previously worked in the medical field and is a poet and barista in training.

They are both locals and have been in retail in area 17 years.

“We’re interested in creating a hub for community,” Mr Basser said.

“artHouse is at it’s core a cafe, retail and gallery. We’re looking to establish a sound economic model and then we can support the art aspect of it.”

The commercial kitchen will be serving “soul food” including homemade soups, cakes, grazing boxes and sushi.

A specialised King Edward spud oven will cook jacket potatoes and they hope to bring in guest chefs down the track.

The retail offering is dedicated to creative products including French knitting kits, 3D puzzles, arts supply and much more.

The first exhibition runs until April 16 and is called Inside.

“It’s a collective exhibition,” Ms Rouleston said.

“We put a call out and had an overwhelming response.

“Ninety per cent is local artists, but we have some as far as America, one Melbourne, one Tamar Valley artist.

“It’s emerging and working artists and the aim is to help them find their audience.”

artHouse will be open 8.30am until 5.30pm six days a week.
