As if it wasn’t hard enough for fans to get hold of limited edition Bluey ‘Dollarbucks’ coins from The Royal Australian Mint, a man has been charged with stealing $600,000 worth of them directly from the warehouse.

The theft occurred in June and involved a man who was allegedly employed by the warehouse stealing 63,000 of the unreleased $1 coins off the back of a truck.

Strike Force Bandit was launched

On 12 July, police were informed of the theft and in honour of the Blue Heeler family, they began Strike Force ‘Bandit’ to find the thief or persons of interest.

The suspect’s home in Sefton was searched on 31 July with the 189 remaining Dollarbucks located and all electronic equipment seized as evidence.

A 47-year-old man was arrested at a house in Westmead and was later charged with three counts of breaking and entering.

According to police, the man also sold most of the coins that featured the beloved Bluey holding a balloon online for up to ‘10 times’ their official sale price.

As the investigations continue, the man was refused bail and will appear at Parramatta local court today.

"I just won a Grannies coin!"

When the limited edition sets of coins from the Royal Australian Mint were released on 6 June for $55, they sold out just a day after going on sale.

Those that did manage to get hold of the sought after coins were ecstatic, some taking to the Facebook group to post their excitement and share which ones they got.

"I just won a Grannies coin," said a superfan.

"I can’t believe it. Bluey you have no idea how much this means to me."

"Cultivating the coin collector of tomorrow"

Royal Australian Mint CEO Leigh Gordon told The Daily Mail at the time that the Bluey coins have provided the Mint with a chance to reconnect with a broader audience.

"We hope that through this new Bluey program we are cultivating the coin collector of tomorrow.

"What better way to start your child's or grandchild's coin collection, than with a Bluey coin?"

I don't think they expected to inspire this type of 'coin collector' however.
