KFC makes controversial drive-thru change no one is happy about

"Watch me ignore it and go straight to the window, that’s ridiculous!"

KFC order chaos: When voice automation takes over

Sometimes, there’s nothing better than going through a drive-thru for food.

It’s quick, easy, and guarantees you’ll have warm food (or a delicious dessert) in your hands in minutes, with no preparation needed - you don’t even need to get out of your car.

But, one fast food giant has made a huge decision that nobody is happy about, and it’s changing the game in the worst way possible.

“Can confirm Nan is not happy”

TikTok user @stacey.1903 has taken to the app this week to share a less than positive experience at her local KFC drive-thru on Dharug Country.

The woman, in her car with her nan, is trying to order a barbeque slider. But instead of speaking to a person at the speaker, she’s instead met with an AI respondent.

“Can I get a slider?” she says.

“What slider would you like?” the AI responds.

However, when she says ‘barbeque’, the AI instead adds on a barbeque dip - and another one, and another one.

“KFC Aus pls explain? Can confirm Nan is not happy,” she captioned the video.

“Put the 14 year old back at the window plz”

Commenters on the post were just as frustrated, asking for fast food’s bravest soldiers (i.e. teenagers) to come back to their stations.

“Nah wtf is this put the 14 year old back at the window plz,” said one person.

“I'll tear down every single AI speaker box I come across til they give those teenagers their f*kn jobs back istg, not a single customer wants this telephone bs,” said another.

“Nope I’d just drive off! Would rather support a human working than this shit,” another agreed.

“Watch me ignore it and go straight to the window, that’s ridiculous! Imagine if you want extra cheese or something?” a fourth asked.

Is it her fault?

However, some suggested that the issues were caused by human error.

“Say it as it is on the menu maybe…” said one commenter.

“Or you could say ‘can I please have a bbq slider’,” another suggested.

“It says on the speaker box to say remove.... not delete,” a third pointed out.

And others said she simply should have asked to speak to a person instead.

“Just keep saying ‘speak to human’ and it'll work,” one person said.

“What you do is order 1,000 cans of Pepsi and a person comes along real fast,” another joked.

There is a solution!

Speaking to Kidspot, a KFC spokesperson confirmed that customers are able to speak to a person if you ask.

"Our voice-ordering technology is being trialled across a handful of our restaurants, and, in this instance, it seems the AI assistant has a penchant for our delicious BBQ dip,” the spokesperson said.

“When ordering at the drive-thru, customers always have the option to speak to a team member if they’d prefer.”
