A HOBART restaurant has been named as a finalist in Gourmet Traveller magazine’s annual awards.

Franklin, in Argyle St, will now vie with Firedoor in Sydney and Africola in Adelaide for the title of Best New Restaurant of the Year.

Gourmet Travller’s review of the restarant, the creation of David Moyle and Ben Lindell, describes the space as hip, the menu as savvy and the cooking sublime.

“Let’s do a quick inventory of its credentials: sensitively converted heritage building, wood-fired oven, sustainable ethos, natural-leaning wine list, great bar menu, a touch of Australiana, chef with a beard. It’s all there. And yet nothing here has a paint-by-numbers feel,” the review posted in February says.

The winners – and the big gong, Australia’s Restaurant of the Year – will be announced at a ceremony on August 19.

Franklin is the only Tasmanian restaurant to make it into the finals.
