PRESTIGE department store David Jones is expected to sign up a range of Tasmanian producers after a tour of the state.
A team of buyers visited wine, whisky, cider, honey, salmon and chocolate suppliers this week.
David Jones buying manager for food Lyana Doyle said the store’s customers were interested in their products’ origins and sustainability.
“We’re focused on telling the customer the story of our products and we felt Tasmania has the variety of quality, artisan boutique products that can’t be found anywhere else,” Ms Doyle said.
“We work with small suppliers and we hand-pick products.
“It’s not just about putting it on the shelf.”
Ms Doyle said Tasmanian products would feature in David Jones food halls in Sydney, Melbourne and Perth.
She said the company would start with packaged food and wine while focusing on the state’s seafood products.
“We’re particularly looking for a seafood operator to operate in our Bourke St [Melbourne] store.”
The tour was organised by Tasmania’s Department of State Growth.
Minister for State Growth Matthew Groom said the store’s interest in Tasmanian produce was exciting news for the state.
“It’s a great opportunity to showcase our world-class products on a national stage,” Mr Groom said.
“The nation is watching, the world is watching.
“We’re really pleased to be able to facilitate the tour for a national and significant distributor and retailer.”
Lark and Overeem Distillery marketing manager Jane Overeem said David Jones would appreciate Lark’s special releases and limited editions.
“It’s a perfect fit for us because a department store like David Jones is after something unique and good quality,” Ms Overeem said.
“And this is exactly what we have here in Tasmania.”
