FORMER foodie favourite Garagistes will be transformed into a modern Greek cafe and restaurant unlike anything seen in Hobart, its new owners say.

Urban Greek is expected to open in November, using local produce to serve traditional food from Crete.

Hobart’s Kakkos family – who bought the business in March – hail from the island, along with chef Pavlos Zacharoudakis.

George Kakkos told the Sunday Tasmanian the new restaurant would serve meals, sweets and pastries made by his mother and grandmother, as well as the former Melbourne chef.

“We’re pretty excited because we think the spot is in an up-and-coming area in Hobart,” Mr Kakkos said.

“The trend is moving out of the traditional spots of Hobart like Salamanca, moving towards the CBD.”

But he warned patrons not to expect Garagistes Mark II.

“That’s why we’re doing something different inside — so people won’t walk in and think this is like Garagistes,” he said.

The family plan to open early for coffee and breakfast, and stay open late for dinner.
