A NEW boutique accommodation offering at Cradle Mountain has been given the green light by the Kentish Council and should be open for business next year.

On Tuesday night the council approved the Our Cradle development and Tourism Industry Council Tasmania CEO Luke Martin says it provides a shot in the arm for the World Heritage Area’s master plan.

Our Cradle will offer 62 luxury rooms and be tucked away on the edge of the Cradle Mountain National Park area.

But it will still provide an “intimate view” of the mountain visitors come to see.

The development will also boast private walking tracks around the property and stargazing facilities.

Developer Simon McDermott, of McDermott coaches, which already operates inside the park ferrying visitors into Dove Lake, said he, in partnership with S Group, was excited to see the project progress to the next stage.

“It’s fantastic to have the received the full support of the Kentish Council and I’d like to thank the public for championing this development,” he said.

“Our Cradle will contribute greatly to tourist numbers and employment in the local areas, as well as continue to put Tasmania on the map for premium tourism experiences.”

Mr Martin said Our Cradle was the first significant investment in Cradle Mountain for a long time.

“The area definitely needs more accommodation and this is outside the park and ticks all the boxes,” Mr Martin said.

“It really is a shot in the arm for the master plan which we hope prompts more private investment in what is one of the State’s prime tourist attractions.”

S Group director Tara Howell said it would offer an unrivalled brand and tourism experience.

“This is a major milestone for the project and we are incredibly excited,” she said.

“Considering the development’s proximity to the Cradle Mountain National Park, it is a sensitive area and it has been our intention all along to respect the place and celebrate the untouched essence of Cradle Mountain.”

Completion of the development is expected in 2020.
