THE planned expansion of the smoke-free zone around Blundstone Arena in Bellerive has been released for public consultation.
Clarence City Council has asked the community to have their say on the proposed 6.44ha butt-out area surrounding the state’s premier sports stadium.
The proposal would see smoking banned from the area bounded by Derwent, Church and Beach streets and Bellerive Beach, including Bellerive Beach Park, Blundstone Arena, adjacent roads and footpaths and the dog-free beach area.
Current legislation already prohibits smoking within 10m of play equipment, air intakes and 3m from the entrance of Blundstone Arena and 20m from public seating during events.
The council hopes the expansion into one cohesive area will improve the amenity of the area, remove any confusion regarding the areas where smoking is banned and help with enforcement.
“It would be a great result for the community, users of parks, beach and the arena to have a smoke-free environment, and it would greatly improve the amenity of the area,” Clarence Mayor Doug Chipman said. The council will consult with nearby residents, users of the park, local businesses and Cricket Tasmanian to gauge community views on the expansion of the smoke-free zone. Consultation is also open on the new online platform Your Say Clarence.
Last month Cricket Tasmania moved to make Blundstone Arena an entirely smoke free venue at all times.
