Nevertheless, this gesture by the pub has ignited a passionate debate, given Perry's well-documented battle with alcoholism.

In the midst of the controversy, one voice rose above all others, asking, "You know he was an alcoholic, don't you?"

Others were quick to highlight Perry's personal wish to be remembered for more than just his iconic Friends role.

Bigger than Friends

Perry bared his soul and shared his tumultuous journey through addiction in his deeply personal book, "Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing."

He had hoped to be a beacon of hope for those facing similar struggles, conveying, "I want people to understand that they're not alone, that there are other people feeling exactly the way they're feeling. That their behaviour is not insane, that they have a disease, and it's not their fault."

Perry fervently believed in the transformative power of recovery and frequently witnessed individuals embarking on the path to healing and reclaiming their lives after conquering addiction.

The Unley's well-intentioned tribute to a beloved actor has unwittingly stirred deep emotions and a profound conversation about the importance of sensitivity when honouring individuals who have grappled with addiction, especially in the aftermath of their untimely departure.
