Quirky detail spotted in Matthew Perry tribute photos at iconic Friends building

Tourists and NYC locals came together to say farewell at the iconic Friends apartment when one pointed out something hanging from the building.

Fans tributes to Friends star Matthew Perry

At the site of the Friends apartment block, tributes have flooded in to honour Matthew Perry - and one fan noticed something she thinks he would have found humourous.

While the sitcom – which ran for ten years from 1994 – was actually filmed in LA, the Bedford Street address was used for the external shots of the New York-based show.

And since the star's passing, fans have been stopping by the iconic building to pay their respects.

Despite the shock, Friends fans find the humour

People left notes, flowers and even a tiny Central Perk coffee mug, as Friends fans farewell a much-loved actor.

Although it is part of the buildings’ Halloween decorations, fans were quick to point out the black humour of a ghost hovering over the makeshift memorial in the West Village.

“That Halloween ghost is kinda fitting for the photo/mood and I think Matthew would enjoy the humour of it,” Holly astutely pointed out on Kidspot's tribute photos shared on Facebook.

“Like a friend passing away out of nowhere”

He may have starred in the hit TV comedy, but if you ask anyone who has been showing up at a makeshift memorial in front of the iconic Friends building at 90 Bedford Street, they feel like Perry was a friend of theirs.

"A really tragic loss. It's the first of the 'Friends' to pass away, and he was just like a friend to everyone," West Village resident Joanne Spataro said.

"I grew up with Friends. I remember 'must-see TV' every Thursday night, watching it with my sister. So it's definitely the end of an era," West Village resident Josh McConnell said.

“I’m a big fan of Friends. I watched every season and now watching the reruns, we leave for London today, but we just had to come here and pay our respects, for the laughs and joy he brought!” said Katey on her way to the airport.

“I grew up with Friends, and it’s kind of like losing a family member you’ve known for so long, who dies so unexpectedly. I hate to say the obvious, but it’s like a friend passing away out of nowhere. It’s shocking,” Craig tells Kidspot.

As longtime Friends fans of nearly 25 years, the two sisters from the United Kingdom, who coincidentally “arrived in New York yesterday” for a family vacation, reflected on Perry’s portrayal of Chandler with nostalgia.

“When I think about Friends and Chandler Bing and Matthew Perry, it takes me straight back to being in university,” one sister said.

“There’s always that hope as a Friends fan that they’ll do something in the future. We’re never really going to get that — and if we do, it won’t be proper, will it?” the other added.

Eerily quiet for one of the busiest cities in the world!

Usually a hustling and bustling corner of the West Village, it was eerily quiet.

Fans left messages of condolences on a whiteboard, while others added their favourite Chandler quotes.

Teenagers, who didn’t grow up with the sitcom, but watched with their parents were visibly shaken and saddened, who wished not to comment but wanted to pay tribute to someone who meant a lot to them.

The Little Owl, the restaurant at the bottom of the Friends building was unfazed by onlookers and fans gathering for long stretches of time, even a garbage truck driver, stopped along his route, in the middle of the road, to take a photo of the tributes, before jumping back in and continuing on his way.

Undoubtedly Friends fans will continue to flock to the West Village location, one fan even leaving a carrot in reference to the Thanksgiving episode in season 5 where Chandler gets his toe cut off by Monica.

Friends is one of the longest-running TV sitcoms.
