HUGE crowds and sold out shows on the first major weekend of Dark Mofo have set the tone for what’s to come for the rest of the wondrous winter festival.

On Friday, about 40,000 people flooded into the Winter Feast, walked the 4km snaking Dark Path trail, partied at Night Mass or packed a venue for a ticketed event.

Dark Mofo spokeswoman Rebecca Fitzgibbon said the paid-entry shows had been a hit with interstate and overseas visitors, with tourists purchasing 65 per cent of all tickets sold so far.

“We had a brilliant start to the full festival period, including more than 13,000 attendances at the botanical gardens and close to 5000 between Beaumaris Zoo and the Queen Victoria Powder Magazine as part of Dark Path,” she said.

“It’s really encouraging to have such strong support for festival events this weekend, as we build activity and intensity towards the solstice.

“The Dark Mofo team is working hard to deliver the best winter celebration we can and we’re looking forward to next weekend, when we will give it our all again.”

Two concerts starring Australian instrumental rock maestros Dirty Three at the Odeon Theatre on Sunday are among 20 Dark Mofo shows that have sold out.

Warren Ellis, Jim White and Mick Turner will celebrate 25 years since the release of their debut album by performing it in full.

The popular performances come after about 3000 lucky music lovers stood side-by-side at MAC2 on Friday night to watch internationally acclaimed English performer and songwriter FKA Twigs take the stage at her sold out gig.

Next weekend’s Night Mass festivities are also on the list of sold out events, but not all hope is lost for last-minute partygoers, with people able to try their luck on door passes from 10pm
