OPTUS has launched an internal investigation after a job ad calling for “Anglo Saxon” candidates was posted online.
The ad for a casual retail consultant in Sydney’s Neutral Bay was pulled down by the telco giant on Friday after being circulated on Twitter.
“Preffered [sic]: Candidates who are Anglo Saxon and live near to Neutral Bay,” the ad said. “Fantastic opportunity for those seeking a career in retail and sales.”
Catherine Snelson tweeted a screenshot of the ad, writing, “@optus seeks Anglo Saxon in Neutral Bay area ... I can’t even ... What were they thinking!”

In a statement, Optus vice president of human resources Vaughan Paul said: “Optus proudly supports diversity and employs staff representing more than 70 nationalities.
“This error is completely unacceptable and a clear breach of our advertising standards and commitment to equal opportunity employment.
“We have removed the advert, and will be investigating how this occurred with a view to taking disciplinary action against those involved. This incident is unacceptable and does not reflect Optus’ values of diversity and inclusion.”
Job website Seek also chimed in on Twitter, writing: “Thanks for pointing this one out Catherine and we’re glad to see the ad was removed swiftly.”
