THE ultimate verdict on Tasmania’s best burger isn’t far off with votes closing soon, and a vegan burger so meaty it’s confusing customers could take out the top spot.
Owner Chris Cooper was thrilled to see The Mayfair Bar climbing up the poll despite operating the Sandy Bay joint for only 12 months.

“We’re flattered to be on that list, it’s pretty awesome,” he said, “It’d be huge for us if we could miraculously pull off winning.
“I don’t like our chances, there are a lot of places doing amazing burgers, but maybe next year we can take on the big boys.”
Mr Cooper said the staff were surprised to see their vegan chicken burger become their top seller.
“We went in with the plan of selling half plant-based and half meat- based, but it’s outsold meat five to one,” he said.
“We get people brining them back complaining [that we sold them a meat-based burger] because it’s so realistic.”
Mr Cooper, who also owns Preachers, said word of mouth meant Mayfair was growing its customers and vegan menu week on week.
He predicted Mr Burger and the Standard were also in with a shot at nabbing the top spot.
Voting for Tasmania’s best burger will close at 9am this Sunday – 9am Sunday 27 September. Cast your vote via the Mercury’s online poll >>
