FRUIT PICKERS arriving in Tasmania from interstate will be exempt from mandatory hotel quarantine but will be subject to strict conditions for the first two weeks of their stay, Agriculture Minister Guy Barnett says.
Premier Peter Gutwein announced an easing of the states border controls for fly-in fly-out and seasonal workers which came into place from Sunday.
Mr Barnett said while the government’s priority was for local workers to fill vacancies on farms, any coming in from interstate would be carefully screened and supervised.
“Seasonal workers must not have spent time in an affected region or premises in the 14 days prior to their arrival and it’s a condition of entry to Tasmania that these workers participate in health screening on arrival,” he said.
“They will be required to operate under strict conditions on their movement for 14 days while staying in their primary place of residence unless going to work, seeking medical care or essential supplies.
“There will be stringent COVID-Safe processes as part of the sector’s COVID-Safe workplace plans, and WorkSafe is actively working with the sector to ensure appropriate processes are in place and in line with public health advice.
“Comprehensive guidelines have been communicated to industry to ensure employers are clearly aware of their obligations to keep their workers and the community safe and WorkSafe will be inspecting both workplaces and worker accommodation sites to ensure compliance and assist where possible.”
