Three people have been taken to hospital after a Westfield shopping centre was evacuated due to fire.

More than 100 people were evacuated from the Liverpool centre after the blaze broke at about midday on Monday.

Fire and Rescue NSW superintendent Adam Dewberry told radio 2GB it’s believed the blaze started at the rear of a shop.

“Firefighters have got water on that fire,” he said, “there’s a lot of smoke … everyone has been evacuated … police are there assisting, we’ve got ambulance there, we’ve got security on scene.”

The exact shop in which the blaze broke out hasn’t been identified, but Mr Dewberry said it was “not in JB Hi-Fi, but near it”.

Seven fire trucks and 28 firefighters were on the scene at the height of the emergency.

A NSW Ambulance spokesperson said three people had to be taken to Liverpool and Fairfield Hospitals for treatment of smoke inhalation.

The blaze was quickly contained, with a cause yet to be determined.

More people were at the shopping centre than usual due to the school holidays.
