Toowoomba police tracked down two teenagers who broke into two Brisbane homes early on Friday morning, September 29.

A 14-year-old Moreton Bay boy and a 17-year-old Brisbane teenager were arrested alongside an allegedly stolen Audi on Victoria St, Toowoomba at 11am.

A Queensland Police spokesman said the pair allegedly broke into a Sandgate home at 4am, before stealing the keys to the Audi and taking off in the car.

“The residence was entered via a kitchen window,” he said.

“Police became aware of the location of the allegedly stolen vehicle through activations of automatic number plate recognition cameras in the Toowoomba area.”

The spokesman said before the pair allegedly stole the Audi, they attempted to steal a different Sandgate resident’s car.

“Between midnight and 4am, there was an attempt to steal a vehicle parked in the driveway of Griffith Street,” he said.

“The residents woke to find their Hyundai i20 moved from the top of the driveway to the bottom of the driveway with damage to the ignition.”

The 14-year-old boy was charged with unlawful use of a motor vehicle, and the 17-year-old was dealt with under the provisions of the Youth Justice Act.

The spokesman said a majority of stolen cars were used for joy rides or used in the commission of other crimes.

“The remainder are stolen by professional car thieves for monetary gain, and are either given a new identity and resold, or stripped down and sold as separate parts,” he said.

The Queensland Police Service urged residents to keep the following safety tips in mind:

- If possible, do not leave cars parked on streets, behind a locked gate or garage

- Always lock doors and close windows when your vehicle is unattended

- If you must leave valuables in your motor vehicle keep them out of sight

- For maximum protection, an engine immobiliser that meets Australian Standard 4601:1999 provides the most effective deterrent to opportunistic vehicle theft
